About Tom
For more than 30 years, Tom Marx has worked with high-net-worth investors, assisting them with their personal, retirement plan, trust, and corporate assets. As a wealth advisor with William Blair & Company’s Private Wealth Management group, Tom helps clients evaluate their investment needs and then assists them in managing their investment portfolios with an emphasis on discretionary management.
Tom is a member of William Blair’s PWM model portfolio committee after serving as its chair for more than twelve years. He joined the firm in 1995 after 10 years with Kidder Peabody. Before joining the securities industry, Tom practiced as a certified public accountant with KPMG Peat Marwick. His role there involved working extensively with and advising privately held companies and their key principals.
Drawing on his strong technical and financial experience, Tom uses William Blair’s proprietary research along with additional Wall Street research resources to screen investment opportunities. Analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, Tom looks for stocks that are reasonably valued and have a potential catalyst for growth that will ultimately add value to his clients’ portfolios.
Tom earned his M.B.A. with a specialization in finance from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and his B.S. in accountancy from the University of Illinois. He received his license as a certified public accountant in 1979 and was awarded the Elijah Watt Sells prize for outstanding performance on the CPA examination. Tom is married and has two children. He lives in Deerfield, Illinois, and is active in several community affairs.
