Team William Blair won the annual Frankfurt Reverse Kicker Charity Cup soccer tournament held September 10, defending the title the team captured in 2019. Now in its 21st year of raising money to help children with cancer, the Charity Cup reverted back to a live event in 2022 after two years as a virtual fundraiser.
The cup raised more than 50,000 euros—the largest amount since its inception. That brought the total amount raised over the life of the cup to more than 750,000 euros for Help for Children with Cancer Frankfurt, a nonprofit committed to improving the care and lives of children with cancer and their families in Germany.
The 11-member team of William Blair colleagues and friends was led by investment banker Philipp Mohr with the Frankfurt office. William Blair won the cup after 10 games during an eight-hour tournament outscoring eight other teams from investment banks and law firms including JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Freshfields, and Milbank. The Charity Cup is based on the principle that the team that wins the most games and scores the most goals pays the most.
“Seeing so many teams with bankers and lawyers all coming together to enjoy the games and raise money for a good cause makes the Charity Cup so special,” said Mohr. “It's always wonderful to win too.”
The win was a special honor for William Blair since this was the first time the firm hosted the cup. Colleagues from both the Frankfurt and Chicago offices participated. A spirit of philanthropy is encouraged and employee-led at William Blair, a tradition passed down from the firm's leadership for over 87 years.
